States begin 20-year review of implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action
Date: Wednesday, April 30, 2014
States are called upon to undertake comprehensive national-level reviews of the progress made and challenges encountered in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcomes of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly. In the process, Governments are collaborating with relevant stakeholders at all levels for the 2015 review so as to benefit from their experience and expertise.
National reviews cover trends, achievements and remaining gaps and challenges, as well as future plans to accelerate implementation at the national level. These reviews will contribute to the global review and appraisal that UN Women will prepare and submit to the 59th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW59) in March 2015.
Regional 20-year review processes
Regional commissions will use the national reviews to prepare regional assessment reports over the course of 2014. Regional reviews—which involve the preparation of regional reports and the organization of regional intergovernmental meetings—are being undertaken in all five regions by the United Nations regional commissions:
- Economic Commission for Africa (ECA)
The ninth African Regional Conference will be held between 11 and 14 November 2014, in Addis Ababa.
- Economic Commission for Europe (ECE)
A regional review meeting will take place from 6 to 7 November 2014, in Geneva.
- Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC)
Two meetings of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Women for Latin America and the Caribbean are scheduled to take place in the first and second semester of 2014. A Special Session of the Regional Conference on Women dedicated to Beijing+20 will be held in Santiago, in the second semester of 2014.
- Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP)
The third session of the Committee on Social Development will take place from 23 to 25 June 2014, in Bangkok, as a preparatory body for the regional Conference on Beijing+20. The Asian and Pacific Conference on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment: Beijing+20 Review will be held from 17 to 20 November 2014, in Bangkok. - Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA)
A consultative regional workshop is tentatively scheduled for April 2014. A high-level regional conference is tentatively scheduled to take place in June 2014, at a venue to be determined.
The outcomes of these regional review processes will also feed into CSW59 in March 2015, which will represent a global review. The session is tentatively scheduled to take place from 9 to 20 March 2015, at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
