Message by UN Women Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman. Launch of Beijing+20 campaign: Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity - Picture it! 

Some 20 years ago, world leaders met in China to adopt the Beijing Platform for Action.

Beijing – What?! you might ask – in particular those of you too young to remember.

Well, imagine a bold plan for a world without discrimination, in which women and men are equal partners in shaping their societies and lives. Imagine a blueprint for building communities where every woman and girl has the opportunity to reach her highest dreams.  

Sounds good? That, in a nutshell, is the Beijing Platform for Action, devised at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995.

It was an ambitious project that we embarked on then, and today I want to invite you to join me and UN Women on the journey toward women’s empowerment laid out in that roadmap. It offers a promise and opportunity for everyone - whether we are 70 or 17, women or men.

We want to hear from you: what has since changed in your lives? What still needs to be done? And most importantly: what are your dreams, ideas and aspirations to reach our final destination — true equality between women and men, everywhere.     

Empowering women means empowering humanity.
