Major global event for Beijing+20 campaign in Sweden

On Saturday 14 June 2014, UN Women will host the first in a series of globalevents as part of the Beijing+20 Campaign, which commemorates the 20-yearanniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the visionary BeijingDeclaration and Platform for Action. Focused on ensuring the human rights ofwomen, the event will be held in collaboration with the Government of Sweden andthe Nordic Forum in Malmö, Sweden. 

UN Women’s Beijing+20 campaign seeks tomobilize global citizens to engage, reaffirm and accelerate the gender equalityand women’s empowerment agenda. The campaign builds momentum through a series ofhigh-powered global events which focus on achievements and gaps in genderequality since 189 governments adopted the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platformfor Action.

The event in Sweden will feature a panel to discuss the mosteffective policies and programmes to promote human rights for women and girlsand new actions to overcome challenges and strengthen the Beijing Platform ofAction. High-profile panelists from around the world will share experiences andsuggest solutions to champion women’s human rights.

Ministers, UN agencies and non-governmental organizations will be brought together to make astrong and united call for action and renewed political commitment for humanrights for women. UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka willdeliver the keynote presentation on the panel, entitled: “Gender Equality andWomen’s Human Rights: Unfinished Business.”
